Climate Change and
Chico State

John Bidwell donated his eight-acre cherry orchard to secure the northern branch of the State Normal School for Chico in 1887. The corner boundaries of his cherry orchard are marked today by a planting of cherry trees, each with a plaque that commemorates this gift. Due to climate change, the Sacramento Valley will no longer get cold enough in the winter for cherry production and cherry farmers will be forced to adapt.

California State University, Chico, will need to adapt to these changing conditions as well. This website explores the impacts a changing climate will have on the three traditional areas of campus operations—academics, business affairs, and student life—and suggests some adaptations to lessen the effects of those impacts.

The students of Chico State's Community Service Practice in Geography course are presenting these adaptations as stories told from the vantage point of 2037, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the university.  These “Dispatches from the Future ➜” are all set on campus the night before graduation.
